Home Decor is Underway…

The home decor is now truly underway. I have been going to the new house in every spare moment that I get, but it has been tough since my spring semester started on Monday. My posting might cut back a little too.. Sorry! It’s just very difficult to juggle both.

Thursday the countertop guys came out and measured and remeasured the area for the countertops. They said the countertops should be here in less than 2 weeks, which is really exciting news! We decided to go with the darker grey granite color that had a little sparkle to it. We also decided to do a 4.5″ backsplash with the granite. I cannot wait to see how the finished product actually looks. We choose a heavy duty stainless steel 40/60 sink, with the larger bowl being on the left, since our dishwasher is on our right. I have heard lots of positives and negatives about stainless steel sinks but we thought it would look best with all the stainless steel appliances we purchased.

Thursday Matt was also able to go out and buy the plugs and additional parts needed to actually hook up the washer and dryer. They indeed looked very pretty sitting in there deaignated space, but we needed them to actually work, so that was another item checked off our “to do” list. He was really concerned about the red and blue tubing and asked if I wanted he to go back and get black, but it honestly doesn’t bother me (for now at least).

My dad was able to work on the closets all evening Thursday. We ripped out the original bars and shelving and decided to do our own new bars. The front closet, Matt’s closet (in the office) and one of my closets in the master bedroom just got a standard one bar (we will eventually put a shelve above them). The second closet in the master bedroom, I had my dad put two bars in so I could have double the hanging space. The closet came out great and now I can fit a lot more clothes into one space.

Friday, Matt came up during the day while I was still at work and had two of the fire department guys help him bring on our abnormally huge refrigerator. They had to take off the refrigerator doors outside of the house and then throw a blanket over it, just to get it inside!! It was that large. Plus the refrigerator weighed over 300lbs! I’m so glad I wasn’t there for that piece. We don’t have it up against the wall yet because we are still painting some kitchen cabinets white on the sides.

Friday night, after I got out of work, I came up to the new house to start unpacking more boxes, putting clothes away in the closest, and decorating the house. I was able to put together most of the seating area (living room number two) which I love!! The loveseat has been ordered from Pier One Imports, but won’t be in for about 7-10 days. It will go on the other side of the trunk and two green accent chairs. I also am so glad that I found an awesome trunk to be used as a coffee table. I was having such a hard time. That was actually the last one left that Pier One Imports had, so I snagged it up and they even have me an additional 20 percent off! Which made the find even better. My plan is to use the inside storage for blankets. Since there is no closet in the living room, I am constantly thinking of ways I can utilize decorations in multiple ways (ex. Trunk= coffee table, statement piece and storage). It’s a win win! I am also looking for a small area rug to put under the trunk to make it stand out from the floor and really pop.

I found this really cute bin for all of Mia Mercedes dog toys at Home Goods in Syracuse!! It looks so cute next to the fire place and it will help us keep them all organized and in one spot! I think I might even find a piece of chalk and write her name on the little bone on the front. Love!!!

Another item I have been keeping in mind while I have been shopping, are picture frames. I love the look of picture frames clustered together all over a house; on end tables, on shelves, on the fire place, in the office or whether it my be. I just want people to have get a “homey” feeling when they walk into our house. I feel that pictures of family and friends are a great way to do that and picture frames can be really unique themselves. Here are a few clusters. Some of them are obviously new and don’t even have pictures in them yet, but just to get an idea.

Last night I also worked on organizing my closet. I pulled out some suits and clothes that I had already on hangers that were just thrown into boxes, and I also made a trip out to my dads house and filled up my car with clothes from his house that needed to be brought over the the new house. The process is going to take awhile. Especially because I have so many clothes, it’s truly unreal. I will likely be starting my own closet on this blog to sell some stuff, I don’t wear half of it. I want this move to be a fresh clean start. Anything I don’t need or don’t wear is not going to make it to to my new closet. Here is one of the closets with the double bar:

Finally, more painting. A few new kitchen cabinets we bought are still being painted, along with the sides of a couple wall cabinets. My dad also bought some more molding that he is going to put around the base of the island and underneath the base cabinets to give them a clean look, but we need to put two coats of paint on the molding first. So as much as I hate (and I mean hate) painting at this point, it has become unavoidable.

I am glad to say that I love the way the new house is turning out. The decor is coming together and next we will be putting art and pieces up on the walls which will make it feel even that much more like home.

Sooner than later,
