Exterior Renovation: Driveway Expansion & More

expanding the driveway

I have not posted anything about renovations in a while. In a way, this is good. We needed to recoup a little bit since our full house interior renovation (minus the bathroom) this past winter. With that being said, Matt was really looking forward to taking on the projects on the exterior of the house. All spring he has been cutting down trees, clearing out brush and doing his best to expand our side lawn. Finally, we picked a weekend when the weather looked promising and that worked for my dad (since he was the operator) and rented an excavator to:

  • expand our driveway
  • add a small patio
  • add a new 5 foot wide front side walk
  • pull out a bunch of tree stumps, and
  • expand and level our side yard

My dad came over around 8:30am and worked nonstop until about 5:00pm. We only had Saturday to accomplish all that work, but we were able to get it all done! Matt hauled slag (which is similar to a stone) all day with his dump trailer to fill in the new part of our driveway that my dad was digging out. We still have a few more loads that we need to haul this week so that the new part of our driveway is more level with the older part. Honestly, it is going to be great just to be able to park two cars side by side! This week we are going to buy bags of grass seed, lay down some straw and hopefully begin the process of re-growing our grass in all the spots that were ripped up or are new.

Our next projects? Landscaping the front of the house, mapping out the project (because I am sure this takes some type of plan and structural stuff first?) and then pouring the concrete for the new front side walk and patio.

Sooner than later,

The Tiny Professional

If the outside looks anything like the inside, it will look great! Have fun with it!

I feel like we are always in renovation mode. It helps to have knowledgeable people as your relatives so you don’t have to pay to have the work done. It sounds like your dad is pretty awesome!

  3. Great job! I enjoy following projects along the way!

That’s awesome that you got it all done in one day! Progress just feels good. :)

  5. We are redoing the outside as well. I look forward to having more projects completed. Landscaping is the fun part!

  6. We expanded our driveway after we moved into our home, but that was 12 years ago and it needs some touch ups now because it is cracking in spots.

I love this! Lots of work but worth it in the end

Wow–I’m impressed that you are doing those renovations yourselves! I can’t wait to see it when it is completed.

  9. Looks like a big project, but definitely worth it!

Looks good! We did all our jobs ourselves, except the excavating. Built our 2 car garage with a little help from hubby’s brothers and Kyle. It feels good, doesn’t it? When you’re done and see your accomplishments! Love the blog!

I can’t believe you finished in one day! That’s motivation!

  12. I love photos that show the progression of home projects. This is going to look very nice!

  13. Wow, I can’t wait to see the result :)

  14. What a mildly intimidating list of projects you have in store for your home! I’m sure it is going to look absolutely beautiful when it’s all finished. I will be embarking on a similar project next week. The parking area in our backyard has been a mess since we moved into our house. The woman who owned it before us tried to make it look nice, but didn’t do the job right and now it’s gravel laid on top of really old bricks. It looks pretty gross. So we are finally getting some black top laid down and a concrete path put through our backyard. I’m excited for it to look a thousand times better than it does now!

  15. First of all, I love your new site! It’s so nice, neat and pretty. And I envy all that big space around your house. You are progressing so much in such a short time, congrats!

  16. Good luck with the renovation!

I would kill to be able to expand our driveway and I am jealous you have all the space to do that. We are stuck with a single wide driveway and it is a pain.

  18. Debra says:

It is going to be gorgeous and so worth it in the end!

  19. Looks like it’s going to take a while to do, but it’ll be worth it in the end I bet.
